The study of these basic truths will give you a firm foundation for your new life in Christ. This study is not only for the new convert, but for all who are young in the faith and want to build their life in Christ. You will receive help as you learn more about the Lord, about salvation, and about the Christian walk and life. This study is especially for adults and youth.
Study each lesson well. It would be wise to use a red lead pencil and underline in your Bible each verse or portion of verses you study. This
will help you remember your study of each new truth. Also work at memorizing each portion that is suggested, or another that would help you in your walk with the Lord.
Note: You will want to find the main phrase or truth in each reference given and write down only that part unless the question calls for the whole verse.
At times you will want to write the answer in your own words. Make your answers short, concise and to the point.
Make your Bible the constant companion for your life. Build a love

Our Concerns
We ought to be concerned about discipling our own children and youth! Their future does depend upon our consistency in molding their lives for Christ. In Matthew 28:18-20, we are commanded to win people to Christ, and that they are to be baptized. But also we are under command to instruct them or to teach them all things. This is the Greek word which means “to teach, or disciple them!”
Paul taught much about discipling others as he also practiced such a labor in the lives of converts. (Read and study II Timothy 2:2; Colossians 1:28-29; I Thessalonians 2:7-12; Galatians 4:17; II Thessalonians 3:8.) This is for us today!
Why is Discipling Others So Needed Today?
Young people today are lacking stability. Christian youth need something solid and stable to build their lives upon. Many things contribute to the instability of their lives, such as:
• A lack of trust. We have taught our young people not to trust anyone or anything. They basically do not trust the establishment, government, adults, or institutions about them. Government has made grandiose promises that it cannot fulfill. Parents make pledges that they do not keep. Our youth are often disappointed and sometimes distrust almost everyone.
• A lack of commitment. All around them, our youth see parents and people in every walk of life quitting when the going gets tough. Instead of weathering the storm, finding answers, and doing right out of commitment, our young people see adults taking the path of least resistance and least demand upon themselves.
• A lack of submission to authority. Students often rebel against teachers, parents, and law enforcement. Often men do not submit to authority. Wives do not wish to submit to their husbands. Liberty, without restraints, has become the goal of many.
Many people (including parents) are engaged in every activity imaginable as they seek their own fulfillment. In this state of affairs youth are seeking someone who cares, someone whom they can trust and respect.
Why it must begin at home.
Many Churches have discipleship programs today, and in some cases have full-time assistant pastors who labor in this ministry. Often the burden for the outsider or new convert is very evident while we neglect our own children who are growing up in the Church. Before we go looking for people to disciple, we need to start with our own families. We have them but a few short years; we cannot depend upon the Christian School, and the local Church to fulfill the task that God has given us as parents. We must obey God’s commands to disciple our children. (See Ephesians 6:4; Proverbs 6:20-23; 22:6; 4:1-2; 4:10-13; 6:20-23; 7:1-4.)
To disciple our own children means much more than completing a course of study. It means sharing, and living the life together of dedication, love and application of biblical truths. (See John 3:30).
Discipleship is designed by God with our best interest in mind. Discipleship is our commitment to the Person of Christ. We do God no favor by committing ourselves to Him. It is He who does us the favor by offering us discipleship. It is the only way to have the blessed, overflowing life that He wants us to have. (John 10:10)
In the process of discipling others, the discipler and disciple are bonded together in a mutual love and fellowship found in Christ. It is an allegiance together to the Lord that brings strength in the relationship between the two which makes possible the molding of the life of the disciple. This is a basic key to success in the work of discipling another person.
The parent discipling his own child is confronted with the task of fulfilling his obligation as a parent as well as commitment to the person of Christ in such a task. May God help each parent to faithfully disciple his or her own.

When we become Christians, we enter into a personal and private relationship with Christ. It is like being married. (See Romans 7:4.) In marriage there is a wonderful mutual exchange of thoughts, words, and activities between the husband and wife. So after salvation there must be a close fellowship between the saved person and his Lord. This is accomplished by:
1. Reading the Word of God which is God’s message to our hearts. We let Him speak to us through His Word.
2. Praying -- talking to the Lord each day.
3. Meditating -- thinking about His Word and how it relates to our lives and about the Lord and our fellowship with Him.
Try to have your devotional time in the morning, after the night’s rest and in preparation for the day.
• In this quiet time, first let the Lord speak to you from His Word; then meditate upon what you have read.
• Think upon what Christ means to you and what your day may hold. Also meditate upon your relationship to the church, the unsaved, and those around you. Then spend time in prayer.
• Thank the Lord for the rest of the night, for the new day and for His love.
• Tell the Lord of your love and your desire to serve Him; relate in prayer some of the things you have read in the Word of God.
• In prayer ask the Lord for strength, wisdom and understanding.
• Look to the Lord to work out His will in your life for that day.
• Ask the Lord for power to witness and to win others to Him.
You must give unhurried time for the Lord. You must also determine each day to spend time in the Word of God, in meditation and in prayer. (Psalm 1:1-3; Joshua 1:1-9) Then before retiring, review the day, thank the Lord for His provisions, and confess any sin or failure on your part. Show your love and devotion to Him. Spend time with the Lord in a personal way each day. It will help you to begin a prayer list. Include in the list the lost ones you desire to see saved, your pastor, the church staff, Sunday School teachers, missionaries, personal needs, family burdens and other friends. It would be good to use something like the following or to make a notebook with pages set up like this:

Assurance is the believer’s full conviction that through the work of Christ alone, received by faith, he is in possession of a salvation in which he will be eternally kept by the power of God. This assurance rests only upon the promises of God to the person who believes. Don’t look for assurance, however, before you thoroughly believe God’s Word. Don’t wait for some kind of feeling. The word feeling does not occur once in the Bible in connection with salvation; but faith in Christ is mentioned over 300 times as that by which we know we are saved.
The Holy Spirit seals into God’s family those who are saved, and he witnesses to them that they are God’s.

I Learn About the Importance of the
Local Church
The local church is very important. Our relationship to the church is directly influenced by our understanding of the church.
Why go to church? Why do we have a church? Is this just man’s idea? Why is it so important?
God makes much of the church in this age. It did not exist in the Old Testament time. But now, in this church age, the local church is God’s institution for worship, service, evangelism, missions, and all other God-given spiritual ministries. Nothing can substitute for the local church. God has a goal, aim, purpose, and place for the church; we need to understand its ministry.
The meaning of the word “church”
To understand its importance we must also know how the word is used in the Word of God. The word “church” comes from the Greek word “ecclesia,” which means “to call out.” The church is literally made up of called out ones, or those who are saved and belong to the Lord. It means to “bring together” and to “call out from among.” We are called out from sin to serve God.
The word Church is used over a hundred times in the New Testament and most of those times it has to do with the local church in a local place. This is where God puts the emphasis for this age.
Confusion about the word “church”
Generally, when people are speaking about the church, they are talking about a building or a meeting place, a religious group, or a denomination, or a sect.
It is not used in any of these ways in the Word of God. God speaks of the church as a group of His people, or a local church of a certain city or place, or the body or bride of Christ that will be caught up into heaven.
What is the Purpose of the Church According to the Following Portions?

God has established the church for the purpose of our growth, service and ministry. A local church is of Him. The Holy Spirit led Paul to establish churches, which was his total purpose in the three missionary journeys. Then the Epistles he wrote were letters sent to minister to those churches he had started.
Today some neglect meeting together in an organized fashion. It is true that some churches have nothing to offer the believer who is seeking to be fed from God’s Word. But God has not abandoned this institution. God raises up men to begin new churches when that is needed in order to meet needs.

I Learn To Meet Temptation
We never escape temptation by becoming a Christian. In fact, some will say they have known more tests, trials, and temptations since they have been saved. Normally temptation is to be solicited to sin, to do wrong, to deliberately transgress the known Word and will of God.
As long as we live in this world of corruption we will be faced with many temptations. Because of the sinful, wicked nature with which we were born, and because of the work of Satan, we will constantly face the temptation to sin. We must know how to conquer our temptations in the name of our Wonderful Savior.

Are we to have faith in prayer? A lot of people talk about having faith in prayer and that there is great power in prayer. They talk as if it is prayer that has power! There isn’t power in prayer, but the power is from the ONE and in the ONE who answers prayer. There isn’t some magical power in prayer. Even the heathen, or the one who worships false Gods, has a belief in the power of prayer. It seems that many people almost worship prayer as some magical cure-all. God cannot use us if we are indifferent to the claims of purity and are careless about sin. God calls us to be holy as He is holy. (I Peter 1:14-16) We are called to a life of separation from the sin of the world. (See II Corinthians 6:14 -- 7:1.) God is always merciful to those who seek to be pure and determine to have victory in their lives. Nothing can compensate for a thoughtless and careless life in which the soul shows no burden to keep itself pure.

Spiritually is available for every saved person. Just as salvation is for whoso- ever will, so a spiritual life is available for all who are saved.

We must treat the Holy Spirit as a Person who has rights, authority, and power to act. He is as much God as the Father or the Son. He is the agent for the trinity to carry out the will and the work of plans on earth in this church age.

Just as a drunk person is controlled by his drink, so the saved person should desire to be under the control of the Holy Spirit. This can only take place as we surrender to His leadership and direction.
To be filled with the Holy Spirit we must:

• Claim His fullness -- Acts 6:3-6; Eph. 5:18

About baptism:
Baptism is similar to a wedding ring. A wedding ring does not make us married. It is simply a symbol to the world that we are married. It is a symbol that the person married belongs to someone. Baptism is a symbol that we belong to Someone-- that we belong to the Lord.
Baptism is a step of obedience to God’s direct command. It is a public testimony of salvation in the blood of Christ as we trust in His death, burial and resurrection. (I Corinthians 15:1-4.)
Baptism does not save. The water did not die for us. Salvation is only through Christ’s finished work on the cross. Baptism is the outward symbol of an inner work which has already taken place in the life of the one who is being baptized.
The scriptural mode of baptism is only by immersion. It can’t be any other. The very word translated baptism is the Greek word, baptizo meaning to “dip, to plunge under, or to submerge.” The scriptural expressions such as much water (John 3:23) down ... into the water” (Acts 8:38), and coming up out of the water” (Mark 1:10) give further proof that baptism is by immersion.
Only immersion can picture the death, burial and resurrection of Christ. (Romans 6:1-5) There is a different word for sprinkling. John the Baptist was not called John the sprinkler!
Baptism is a step of identification with Christ. In the early church age, to be baptized was to also suffer persecution. The saved were a despised group and people did not readily follow Christ in baptism unless they were truly saved.
Our Baptist Heritage
Many are not aware of the fact that the baptist movement existed long before the reformation. In fact Baptist people did not come out of the Roman church. They existed in the anabaptist movement long before and were greatly persecuted by the Roman Catholic Church along with others who would not accept Rome’s baptism. Many are also not aware that baptism is a step of identification whereby we accept the doctrines of the movement into which we are baptized. Baptism to the Roman Church was and is the means by which original sin are washed away. All this doctrine is false. And the sad truth is that most of the churches which came out of the reformation never turned away from Rome’s method of baptism. And still today there are many who think they partake of God’s salvation by their act of baptism.
Many men laid down their lives in order to have religious freedom and to worship and obey Him according to His written Word. To the Roman mind the Church is the source of truth and not the Word of God. Many protestant churches are no different today. For them their traditions dictate what they do! How Sad!
