BASIC BIBLE TRUTHS FOR NEW BELIEVERS

A STUDY OF BASICS FOR THE NEWLY SAVED,

A WONDERFUL STUDY FOR THOSE WHO NEED TO

GROW IN THEIR WALK, AND

BUILDING CHRIST-LIKE BELIEVERS WHO WILL BE REPRODUCERS

-- DR. EDWARD WATKE JR.
Revival In The Home Ministries

Preface

The study of these basic truths will give you a firm foundation for your new life in Christ. This study is not only for the new convert, but for all who are young in the faith and want to build their life in Christ. You will receive help as you learn more about the Lord, about salvation, and about the Christian walk and life. This study is especially for adults and youth.

Study each lesson well. It would be wise to use a red lead pencil and underline in your Bible each verse or portion of verses you study. This
will help you remember your study of each new truth. Also work at memorizing each portion that is suggested, or another that would help you in your walk with the Lord.

Note: You will want to find the main phrase or truth in each reference given and write down only that part unless the question calls for the whole verse.
At times you will want to write the answer in your own words. Make your answers short, concise and to the point.

Make your Bible the constant companion for your life. Build a love
walk
with the Lord and with His Word. We will be praying for you as you live your life for Christ. (Philippians 1:21; Matthew 4:4; I Peter 2:2)

Warmly, in Christ,

Our Concerns

We ought to be concerned about discipling our own children and youth! Their future does depend upon our consistency in molding their lives for Christ. In Matthew 28:18-20, we are commanded to win people to Christ, and that they are to be baptized. But also we are under command to instruct them or to teach them all things. This is the Greek word which means “to teach, or disciple them!”

Paul taught much about discipling others as he also practiced such a labor in the lives of converts. (Read and study II Timothy 2:2; Colossians 1:28-29; I Thessalonians 2:7-12; Galatians 4:17; II Thessalonians 3:8.) This is for us today!

Why is Discipling Others So Needed Today?

Young people today are lacking stability. Christian youth need something solid and stable to build their lives upon. Many things contribute to the instability of their lives, such as:

A lack of trust. We have taught our young people not to trust anyone or anything. They basically do not trust the establishment, government, adults, or institutions about them. Government has made grandiose promises that it cannot fulfill. Parents make pledges that they do not keep. Our youth are often disappointed and sometimes distrust almost everyone.

A lack of commitment. All around them, our youth see parents and people in every walk of life quitting when the going gets tough. Instead of weathering the storm, finding answers, and doing right out of commitment, our young people see adults taking the path of least resistance and least demand upon themselves.

A lack of submission to authority. Students often rebel against teachers, parents, and law enforcement. Often men do not submit to authority. Wives do not wish to submit to their husbands. Liberty, without restraints, has become the goal of many.
Many people (including parents) are engaged in every activity imaginable as they seek their own fulfillment. In this state of affairs youth are seeking someone who cares, someone whom they can trust and respect.

Why it must begin at home.

Many Churches have discipleship programs today, and in some cases have full-time assistant pastors who labor in this ministry. Often the burden for the outsider or new convert is very evident while we neglect our own children who are growing up in the Church. Before we go looking for people to disciple, we need to start with our own families. We have them but a few short years; we cannot depend upon the Christian School, and the local Church to fulfill the task that God has given us as parents. We must obey God’s commands to disciple our children. (See Ephesians 6:4; Proverbs 6:20-23; 22:6; 4:1-2; 4:10-13; 6:20-23; 7:1-4.)

To disciple our own children means much more than completing a course of study. It means sharing, and living the life together of dedication, love and application of biblical truths. (See John 3:30).

Discipleship is designed by God with our best interest in mind. Discipleship is our commitment to the Person of Christ. We do God no favor by committing ourselves to Him. It is He who does us the favor by offering us discipleship. It is the only way to have the blessed, overflowing life that He wants us to have. (John 10:10)

In the process of discipling others, the discipler and disciple are bonded together in a mutual love and fellowship found in Christ. It is an allegiance together to the Lord that brings strength in the relationship between the two which makes possible the molding of the life of the disciple. This is a basic key to success in the work of discipling another person.

The parent discipling his own child is confronted with the task of fulfilling his obligation as a parent as well as commitment to the person of Christ in such a task. May God help each parent to faithfully disciple his or her own.

This book is dedicated to help you build up
the new convert, those who are young
in the faith, and those of your
own youth and children.

Memorize: Psalm 1:2 (possible also verse 3)

When we become Christians, we enter into a personal and private relationship with Christ. It is like being married. (See Romans 7:4.) In marriage there is a wonderful mutual exchange of thoughts, words, and activities between the husband and wife. So after salvation there must be a close fellowship between the saved person and his Lord. This is accomplished by:

1. Reading the Word of God which is God’s message to our hearts. We let Him speak to us through His Word.
2. Praying -- talking to the Lord each day.
3. Meditating -- thinking about His Word and how it relates to our lives and about the Lord and our fellowship with Him.
Try to have your devotional time in the morning, after the night’s rest and in preparation for the day.
• In this quiet time, first let the Lord speak to you from His Word; then meditate upon what you have read.
• Think upon what Christ means to you and what your day may hold. Also meditate upon your relationship to the church, the unsaved, and those around you. Then spend time in prayer.

• Thank the Lord for the rest of the night, for the new day and for His love.
• Tell the Lord of your love and your desire to serve Him; relate in prayer some of the things you have read in the Word of God.
• In prayer ask the Lord for strength, wisdom and understanding.
• Look to the Lord to work out His will in your life for that day.
• Ask the Lord for power to witness and to win others to Him.

You must give unhurried time for the Lord. You must also determine each day to spend time in the Word of God, in meditation and in prayer. (Psalm 1:1-3; Joshua 1:1-9) Then before retiring, review the day, thank the Lord for His provisions, and confess any sin or failure on your part. Show your love and devotion to Him. Spend time with the Lord in a personal way each day. It will help you to begin a prayer list. Include in the list the lost ones you desire to see saved, your pastor, the church staff, Sunday School teachers, missionaries, personal needs, family burdens and other friends. It would be good to use something like the following or to make a notebook with pages set up like this:

16. By whom are the believers sealed?

II Cor. 1:22_________________________________________________
Ephesians 1:13______________________________________________
Ephesians 4:30______________________________________________

Assurance is the believer’s full conviction that through the work of Christ alone, received by faith, he is in possession of a salvation in which he will be eternally kept by the power of God. This assurance rests only upon the promises of God to the person who believes. Don’t look for assurance, however, before you thoroughly believe God’s Word. Don’t wait for some kind of feeling. The word feeling does not occur once in the Bible in connection with salvation; but faith in Christ is mentioned over 300 times as that by which we know we are saved.
The Holy Spirit seals into God’s family those who are saved, and he witnesses to them that they are God’s.

Memorize John 5:24

In summary we could say: Feelings may change, Facts of God’s Word never change, Faith must rest completely upon the facts of God’s Word. Faith is taking God at His Word!
Faith is:

F - orsaking
A - ll
I
T - rust
H - im

We are not saved because we walked an aisle in a church or because we prayer certain perfect words, or because someone else says we are saved. We are saved only by one thing! We are saved by putting faith in the finished work of Christ on the Cross, plus nothing! Be sure Christ is yours!

_________________________________________________________

In Conclusion: (Also read the very last page of the book.)

• Baptism is a symbol that we belong to God.
• Baptism is a testimony that we are saved and have a new life in Christ. Our baptism pictures that new life we have in Christ -- buried in the likeness of His death, and raised to newness of life.
• Baptism is a picture of Christ’s death, burial and resurrection.
(See I Corinthians 15:1-4.)

Memorize Acts 2:41-42

LESSON 5

I Learn About the Importance of the
Local Church

The local church is very important. Our relationship to the church is directly influenced by our understanding of the church.
Why go to church? Why do we have a church? Is this just man’s idea? Why is it so important?
God makes much of the church in this age. It did not exist in the Old Testament time. But now, in this church age, the local church is God’s institution for worship, service, evangelism, missions, and all other God-given spiritual ministries. Nothing can substitute for the local church. God has a goal, aim, purpose, and place for the church; we need to understand its ministry.

The meaning of the word “church”
To understand its importance we must also know how the word is used in the Word of God. The word “church” comes from the Greek word “ecclesia,” which means “to call out.” The church is literally made up of called out ones, or those who are saved and belong to the Lord. It means to “bring together” and to “call out from among.” We are called out from sin to serve God.
The word Church is used over a hundred times in the New Testament and most of those times it has to do with the local church in a local place. This is where God puts the emphasis for this age.

Confusion about the word “church”
Generally, when people are speaking about the church, they are talking about a building or a meeting place, a religious group, or a denomination, or a sect.
It is not used in any of these ways in the Word of God. God speaks of the church as a group of His people, or a local church of a certain city or place, or the body or bride of Christ that will be caught up into heaven.

What is the Purpose of the Church According to the Following Portions?
1. Ephesians 3:21 “Unto Him be glory in the _________ by Christ Jesus.” We are to bring glory to _______.

2. In Acts 20:28-32, Paul admonished the leaders from Ephesus to feed the _________ of God, which He hath _______________ with his own blood.”

3. In Acts 11:22-26 we read the church in Jerusalem heard about many being saved in Antioch. They sent Barnabas, who exhorted them all, that with
___________ of heart they would _________ unto the Lord.”
(We are to be fed the Word of God.)

4. In I Timothy 3:15 we see the church is to be “the pillar and ____________ of the truth. (For it is the _________ of God, the church of the ________ God.)

5. What did the early saved people do as stated in Acts 2:42? “And they continued stedfastly in the ___________ __________, and fellowship, and in breaking of _________, and in ___________.”

6. What was God doing according to Acts 2:47?__________________________________________________________________________________

7. What is the purpose based on Christ’s commission given to the apostles who were to build the church? Mark 16:15 _________________________________

Various Facts About the Church:
1. Who founded the church according to Matthew 16:16-18?_______________

2. According to Ephesians 4:11, God planned for certain types of Christian workers. One of these is the pastor. Verse 12 expresses the reason for his work. What is his purpose?________________________________________________________________________________________

3. Some of the early believers in the New Testament times had a certain problem. What were they told not to neglect in Hebrews 10:25? __________________
_________________________________________________________

4. As we attend church, in what should we delight?
Psalm 112:1________________________________________________

As We Go To Church We Will Be Greatly Blessed:

2. I John 1:3-4 states: “. . . that ye also ______ have fellowship with ____: and truly our _____________ is with the Father, and with His Son, __________.

3. The local church is blessed as we consider that we “being many, are _____ _______ in Christ, and every one __________ one of another.” (See Romans 12:5; Consider: I John 3:16-18.)

How Can the Local church Help Us Guard Our Lives From Backsliding Away From the Lord?
1. According to Hebrews 10:24, there we are to “. . . consider one __________ to __________ unto love and to ________ works.” (We need this!)

2 At Thessalonica “. . . ye turned to God from _____ to serve the living and true God.” (I Thess. 1:9-10)
(Consistently serving the Lord will help keep us from sin!)

In What Ways Can the Local Church Enlarge Your Service For the Lord? (See what you can find in these portions.)
1. In Acts 6:1-8 we read of many being saved (v. 7) and they needed the church (v. 3) “to look ye out among you seven ______ of honest report, full of the Holy Spirit, and _________, whom we may __________ over this business.” (This is the first record of deacons, meaning one who serves.)

2. Acts 11:19-26: With many being saved in Antioch, new ministry was needed. Who began to serve? ___________ & ______ What were they doing?______
_________________________________________________________

3. A new thing happened in Acts 13:1-4! Is God calling out people today to go and plant churches? _______ What three things do we need to do?
G___, P_______, G_______! (Read Matthew 9:36-38.)

3. What kind of church should we attend? Acts 5:42 “Where they ceased not _____________________________________”
Jude 3, Where they “earnestly contended___________________________”
Acts 20:28-32 ____________________________________________________________________________________________

The book of Ephesians speaks more of the local church than any other epistle. What do you find in the following verses? (Match the verse and phrase.)

habitation of God through the Spirit____________________________ Eph. 3:21
household of God ___________________________________________Eph. 2:20
His body, fullness of him that filleth ____________________________Eph. 2:22
Christ, the chief corner stone _________________________________Eph. 5:25
glory in the church_________________________________________Eph. 2:19
Christ died for the church____________________________________ Eph. 1:23

God has established the church for the purpose of our growth, service and ministry. A local church is of Him. The Holy Spirit led Paul to establish churches, which was his total purpose in the three missionary journeys. Then the Epistles he wrote were letters sent to minister to those churches he had started.
Today some neglect meeting together in an organized fashion. It is true that some churches have nothing to offer the believer who is seeking to be fed from God’s Word. But God has not abandoned this institution. God raises up men to begin new
churches when that is needed in order to meet needs.

LESSON 7

I Learn About The Consecrated Life

To grow in grace is the first duty and privilege of the born-again person. Those who stop growing intellectually soon die intellectually. The same holds true in the Christian life. If we stop growing spiritually we will actually go backwards.
Our grow is the proof of life. To grow spiritually one must be surrendered to the Lord. If we wish enter into spiritual blessing, we must have victory over the things of the flesh, the world, and the devil. The greatest joy in life will come when we allow Christ to become LORD of our lives.

LESSON 8

I Learn To Meet Temptation

We never escape temptation by becoming a Christian. In fact, some will say they have known more tests, trials, and temptations since they have been saved. Normally temptation is to be solicited to sin, to do wrong, to deliberately transgress the known Word and will of God.
As long as we live in this world of corruption we will be faced with many temptations. Because of the sinful, wicked nature with which we were born, and because of the work of Satan, we will constantly face the temptation to sin. We must know how to conquer our temptations in the name of our Wonderful Savior.

1. What exhortation is given the Christian in I Cor. 10:12?________________

2. Can any child of God safely say he has attained sin-less perfection, that he no longer sins? I John 1:8, 10 See verse 8 ____________________________
vs. 8______________________________________________________
vs. 10_____________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________

The fact that a Christian cannot altogether escape temptation shows that God has some purpose in allowing it. God has a purpose in not taking away our sinful nature or in not taking us immediately to heaven when we are saved. Let us see if we can discover why He allows us to be tempted.

3. What may be accomplished in us by the occasional trying of our faith?

I Corinthians 10:13 ___________________________________________ _________________________________________________________

6. Will God give a reward to those who stand against temptations and seek victory over them? James 1:12 ____ What is that reward?____________________

Just as exercise is necessary for all of us, temptation is necessary to make us strong Christians. Temptation is harmless until we give it cooperation by entering into the temptation. Then we also give Satan an advantage, a foot-hold or toe-hold in our lives. Temptation itself is not sin, the yielding to temptation is sin.

1. What we are to know -- Romans 6:6
2. What we are to reckon to be sure -- Romans 6:11
3. What we are to yield -- Romans 6:13-14; 12:1-2
4. What we are to experience -- Romans 8:14; Galatians 5:16-24

LESSON 9

I Learn How to Pray

We must pray:

• Because there is a devil who seeks the downfall of God’s child
(Ephesians 6:12-13, 18),
• because it is the appointed way to receive blessings from God (James 4:2; Matthew 7:7),
• because our Lord Himself prayed (Mark 1:35),
• and because it leads to fullness of joy and sweet fellowship with the Lord. (John 16:23, 24).

As we must have the Word of God abiding in our hearts and lives, so also nothing is so important to the Christian as to learn how to pray.

1. On what basis are we to approach God in prayer? John 16:23 ____________

James 4:3,4________________________________________________
Psalm 66:18________________________________________________
Ezekiel 14:3________________________________________________
Proverbs 21:13______________________________________________

Are we to have faith in prayer? A lot of people talk about having faith in prayer and that there is great power in prayer. They talk as if it is prayer that has power! There isn’t power in prayer, but the power is from the ONE and in the ONE who answers prayer. There isn’t some magical power in prayer. Even the heathen, or the one who worships false Gods, has a belief in the power of prayer. It seems that many people almost worship prayer as some magical cure-all. But at the same time they do not look to the Heavenly Father or do they know Christ the Son as Savior and Lord of their lives. This is sad to say the least.
The object of our faith is what is important. Faith in and of itself means little. The question is: In whom do you trust? To whom do you yield yourself? And do you walk in self-willed living or does God have right of way in your life? Faith is taking God at His Word! For what God says, God means!

Memorize Luke 11:9-10

LESSON 10

I Learn To Build My Christian Character

As we study the Word of God, it is very evident that God wants us to grow in Him. It is His will that we build a life that is pleasing to Him. The Holy Spirit was given not only to indwell us, but also to fill and control our lives that we might be full-grown, mature Christians.
It is our duty to build the character traits into our lives that are God-honoring and beneficial to others. We must live so as to edify or build up the lives of the saved around us and maintain a good testimony by our what we live from day to day.

1. What is one of the first evidences of a real salvation? John 13:34,35________
_________________________________________________________

13. Since we are bought with a price, what should we do according to I Corinthians 6:20?_____________________________________________________

14. What should be our daily prayer? Psalm 51:10 _______________________
_________________________________________________________

God cannot use us if we are indifferent to the claims of purity and are careless about sin. God calls us to be holy as He is holy. (I Peter 1:14-16) We are called to a life of separation from the sin of the world. (See II Corinthians 6:14 -- 7:1.) God is always merciful to those who seek to be pure and determine to have victory in their lives. Nothing can compensate for a thoughtless and careless life in which the soul shows no burden to keep itself pure.

When we are saved we are given a new nature. It is God’s nature given to us which cannot sin and hates sin. The very fact that He puts His nature within us should give us a driving desire within to be holy and live pleasing to Him.

15. What is the example set before us as stated in I John 2:6?________________

LESSON 11

I Learn About My Stewardship Responsibilities

We are called to be stewards of all that God has given to us (I Corinthians 4:2). God owns everything; we are but the stewards of what He has entrusted unto us. In all this we will give an account some day. (See Romans 14:10; II Corinthians 5:10.)

16. What is the warning from the Lord in Luke 12:15? _____________________
_________________________________________________________

17. What does Christ say about what does not make up life as found in Luke 12:15? ____________________________________________________
_________________________________________________

Read and think through Matthew 6:24-34. What is it that Christ promises? What are our basic needs? Do we have needs or is our problem desires and wants? Maybe we need to allow the Lord to change our wants. Maybe the problem Christians have with materialism is that we have not given our lives over to Christ to serve Him with our whole heart! Possibly we don’t know what true discipleship is!
God’s claim on our time, talent, and income is for our good. He makes the tithe (a tenth of our increase) the minimum of what is reasonable, not because He is in need, but because we need to learn to give for our own good. We will give account of the whole, or all 100% of what we handle as God’s stewards. We need to learn to give sacrificially for His glory. (Read II Corinthians 8.)

Memorize II Corinthians 9:7

LESSON 12

I Learn To Witness To Others

Our open confession of Christ to others is one of the commands of Christ. (See Romans 10:9-13; Matthew 10:32-33.) Such confession before men is an essential results of salvation and an evidence that we are saved. Saving faith is bound to express itself, not only through the life but also through the lips. For Christ said, “out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.” (See Matthew 12:34).
Our speaking boldly for Christ is one of the great means of spiritual growth in the Christian life. There is a great trio of things we need to do daily -- Bible reading and study, prayer, and witnessing. If we engage in these daily we will experience abundant blessing and abounding growth.
Too many Christians are like the Dead Sea, always taking in and receiving but never giving out. Thus they become stagnant and useless.

Considering the Message We Should Share!

If you’d like special insight and challenge to your heart then read Acts, chapters 1-5 and notice how many times they spoke about Christ and His resurrection and how we are saved! We need to share the following with the lost:

A simple outline -- Using the Romans Road:

A. The Condition of the Lost -- Romans 3:9-12, 23

B. The Remedy -- Christ paid for our sins -- Romans 5:8; 5:6;

C. God offers us eternal life -- Romans 6:23 (The wages of sin brings death
(Romans 5:12, 19; God offers us eternal life as a gift through Jesus,
because of His death for our sins.)

D. Our part -- we must respond -- Romans 10:10-13
We receive Jesus as Savior by our confessing with the mouth that we
need Him. (Repentance is involved here -- see below.) We trust Him with our hearts thus receiving Him as Savior and Lord.

______________________________________________________

Give the Gospel Story -- not your personal opinions
1. In simplicity, without argument
2. In power and conviction of the Holy Spirit

______________________________________________________

Another outline -- more detailed:

A. Giving the Story Itself -- I Corinthians 15:3-4

1. The FACT of sin -- Romans 3:9-12, 23

2. The PENALTY of sin -- Death -- Romans 6:23; Romans 5:12 and 5:19

a. God hates sin because it robs us of life. Sin in its essence is our will pitted against God’s will.
b. God decreed the penalty of sin to be death.
c. Either you must pay the penalty or someone must pay it for you.

3. The PAYMENT of sin -- Romans 5:6,8; 3:19-24; I Peter 2:24;
II Corinthians 5:21

a. Only CHRIST could pay for sin -- Acts 4:12
(1). He had no sin of His own -- I Cor. 5:21
(2). He paid the infinite price of His own blood. Heb. 9:22, 26-28; 10:14
b. Christ PAID for all our sins -- I Peter 2:24; Revelation 1:5

4. Our SALVATION FROM SIN -- we must accept.

a. We must know the facts and then receive Him.
b. We must take HIM for our own Savior.
(1). To “believe on Him... receive Him,” (John 1:12, Acts 16:31)
means more than a mere intellectual assent.
(2). Salvation involves receiving what Christ did on the cross as payment for our sins. It involves a heart trust. (Romans 10:9-13)
(3). Receiving Him also involves repentance. One cannot be saved without repenting. To repent means to change one’s mind about our sin, about God, and to turn from our sin to God by faith in Christ. (Acts 17:30; 20:21; 2:37-47)
(4). Acceptance means being “born again,” a spiritual birth from or of God. John 1:12, 13; 3:3, 7.

B. What the Gospel GIVES us.

1. Forgiveness and redemption -- Ephesians 1:7; Colossians 1:14

2. Make us born-again sons of God -- John 1:11-13

3. Give us eternal life, a gift to be received -- Romans 6:23

4. Give us assurance of eternal life -- I John 5:10-13; John 10:27-29

5. Give us a new life -- II Corinthians 5:17

6. Give us a new fellowship of prayer -- Matt. 7:7-8; Luke 11

7. Give us the joy of answers to prayer -- John 15:7

8. Give us the thrill of growing spiritually -- I Peter 2:2; Colossians 2:6,7

9. Give us a new relationship -- the Holy Spirit indwelling in our lives.
-- I Corinthians 6:19, 20

Memorize: Romans 1:16

LESSON 13

I Learn To Know and Walk With the
Holy Spirit

Spiritually is available for every saved person. Just as salvation is for whoso- ever will, so a spiritual life is available for all who are saved.
We are saved on the basis of Christ being our personal Savior; we are a spiritual Christian on the basis of our being yielded to the Holy Spirit. Too many Christians are living on a carnal plane. They have not made a personal response to the Person and work of the Holy Spirit in their lives. We must appropriate His ministry for our lives.
We must understand these things about the trinity. God the Father is in Heaven for us. Christ, the Son, who paid for our sins, is in heaven ministry for us as the High Priest. The Holy Spirit is presently in the world, carrying out the work of the God-head Three. He is ministering in our lives as the indwelling Comforter. You will want to study all of these verses carefully.

The Holy Spirit is God, the Father’s, gift:

We must treat the Holy Spirit as a Person who has rights, authority, and power to act. He is as much God as the Father or the Son. He is the agent for the trinity to carry out the will and the work of plans on earth in this church age.
The Holy Spirit wants the right to work in our lives now. Our responsibility is to give Him right of way to work in our lives.

Just as a drunk person is controlled by his drink, so the saved person should desire to be under the control of the Holy Spirit. This can only take place as we surrender to His leadership and direction.

To be filled with the Holy Spirit we must:

• Confess every known sin -- Psalm 32:1-5
• Yield our all -- Romans 12:1,2
• Claim His fullness -- Acts 6:3-6; Eph. 5:18
• Walk by faith in His control and direction -- Colossians 2:6; John 7:37-39

Memorize: John 14:16

Supplemental Thoughts

About baptism:

Baptism is similar to a wedding ring. A wedding ring does not make us married. It is simply a symbol to the world that we are married. It is a symbol that the person married belongs to someone. Baptism is a symbol that we belong to Someone-- that we belong to the Lord.
Baptism is a step of obedience to God’s direct command. It is a public testimony of salvation in the blood of Christ as we trust in His death, burial and resurrection. (I Corinthians 15:1-4.)
Baptism does not save. The water did not die for us. Salvation is only through Christ’s finished work on the cross. Baptism is the outward symbol of an inner work which has already taken place in the life of the one who is being baptized.
The scriptural mode of baptism is only by immersion. It can’t be any other. The very word translated baptism is the Greek word, baptizo meaning to “dip, to plunge under, or to submerge.” The scriptural expressions such as much water (John 3:23) down ... into the water” (Acts 8:38), and coming up out of the water” (Mark 1:10) give further proof that baptism is by immersion.
Only immersion can picture the death, burial and resurrection of Christ. (Romans 6:1-5) There is a different word for sprinkling. John the Baptist was not called John the sprinkler!
Baptism is a step of identification with Christ. In the early church age, to be baptized was to also suffer persecution. The saved were a despised group and people did not readily follow Christ in baptism unless they were truly saved.

Our Baptist Heritage

Many are not aware of the fact that the baptist movement existed long before the reformation. In fact Baptist people did not come out of the Roman church. They existed in the anabaptist movement long before and were greatly persecuted by the Roman Catholic Church along with others who would not accept Rome’s baptism. Many are also not aware that baptism is a step of identification whereby we accept the doctrines of the movement into which we are baptized. Baptism to the Roman Church was and is the means by which original sin are washed away. All this doctrine is false. And the sad truth is that most of the churches which came out of the reformation never turned away from Rome’s method of baptism. And still today there are many who think they partake of God’s salvation by their act of baptism.
Many men laid down their lives in order to have religious freedom and to worship and obey Him according to His written Word. To the Roman mind the Church is the source of truth and not the Word of God. Many protestant churches are no different today. For them their traditions dictate what they do! How Sad!
